If you are coming to Japan and planning on using the train system then getting yourself an IC Card is the way to go. These rechargeable cards allow you to ride the train without having to go to ticket machines and fare adjustment machines each time you go on and off the train. Instead you can simply charge the card, scan it when entering and exiting a station and then you are charged appropriately. Charging your IC Card is very simple but the way it’s done is different depending on where you are in the country. In this video you will see how to charge your card in Yamaguchi Prefecture using an ICOCA machine.
These machines are small and simple. Using then is rather easy too! First insert your IC Card into the slot. Then the machine will read the amount of money you have remaining on the card. Then decide how much money you would like to put on your card. Once this has been completed enter the amount of money (bills only) into the slot and wait for the machine to show you that the money has been entered and added to the card. Finally hit the “receipt” button. When the receipt is printed remove your card and you’re on your way. It’s that simple.
