UHF two-way radios are the Ultra High Frequency version of two-ways. Many people think that using VHF is much better because they work over a much longer distance. That is not always the case. UHF radios have a shorter frequency and therefore cover a shorter distance, but the they can penetrate obstacles much easier than VHF. VHF works best with an unobstructed terrain. Sometimes though, you cannot avoid obstructions. An example is when you are using the radios in a tall building. There are walls and floors separating you from other people. VHF would not even work in this situation. However, UHF would be fine. The shorter wavelengths make it easier for them to dig through walls, etc… and make a connection.
If you are using the UHF hand held devices only on FRS (family radio service) channels you do not need a license. If you are using UHF for business though you must have a license with the FCC. Hand held devices are only allowed to have up to 5 watts of power. If you use a vehicle mounted model the car battery will supply the power. Many taxi companies use these. It is much easier for the company to keep in touch with the driver using a two-way radio with UHF, than a cell phone, especially if they are operating with a large crowded city.
UHF radios are typically a lot better for business use than a cell phone, if the business is operated within a smaller area like a plant or factory. Most of the communications is done within the business so longer ranges are not as important as clarity and UHF capabilities (getting through obstructions like walls, etc..). If distance is more important and you are working in an unobstructed location VHF is probably a better alternative.
